Slick and intuitive, Gallery is a web based photo application that integrates quickly and easily with your website. Fast configuration has you up and running in minutes, adding images to your website via a powerful user interface. Automatic thumbnails, rotation, resizing and more make it simple to present your photos the exact way you want. Authenticated user profiles and private albums make Gallery a terrific option for businesses and communities who want to allow access to specific users.
Installation was fast and easy. During the process I was able to select a number of useful plug-ins for automatic set up, more about them in a minute. Following some initial configuration, I was ready to start uploading pictures. You have the ability to upload up to 8mb at a time, making transfers quick and efficient. Even better is the Archive Upload feature that lets you upload a zip file and extract it on the server. This is an excellent way to populate the image library very quickly.
Album management is equally streamlined. You can add and rename albums, sort images, add captions and more. Bulk actions for moving and deleting photos and editing image permissions make managing large libraries a snap.
The Group features are especially powerful for large user populations. Permissions are granted over 3 broad areas- commenting, ratings, and core functions, and these can be assigned in any combination. This gives administrators the ability to optimize how Gallery is used while maintaining policy based security.
I was impressed at the careful attention paid to security. This included the creation of a text file in the root directory with an access key as well as a prompt to change permissions on configuration files to prevent unauthorized access. Permissions based accounts allows delegation of abilities to specific users or groups of users, giving large organizations ample flexibility. Gallery also supports BBC code for embedded markups, allowing formatting options in a more secure format than HTML.
Gallery has an impressive, feature packed control panel, with obvious tools like imaging editing and automatic thumbnail generation, to less obvious but equally valuable tools for performance tuning and database optimization. Support for EXIF/IPTC embedded photo information includes the ability to display the data you want, and an included themes library allows you to easily choose a suitable look for Gallery.
In all, Gallery is a full featured image library and management application for your website. Powerful user-based administration and ease of use make it a perfect solution for organizations and communities and individuals alike.
